Summer to Fall Closet Transformation

Days in the sun
And nights in the rain
Summer is over, simple and plain
Found me some fun that’s good for the pain
Already told you, I don’t feel the same
I don’t feel the same

-Word to Drake (Summer’s Over interlude; Views)

Sunny scorching days, and warm humid nights…we’ve been dreaming of these times since the winter, along with the freezing, below 10 degree weather and the 2-10 inches of snow that we trudged through. As the warm weather peaked, guys were happy to bust out the fitted cap and shorts with the matching Jordans that they stood in line and waited hours for. For girls, sun dresses and sandals were the summer staple that could be seen in every color, with the occasional tank top and shorts or even the “bodysuit” and slim fit jeans.

Hope as we might, wish as we will, summer’s slowly coming to an end and fall will soon be upon us. With the change of seasons, many people think that they need to pack away their summer clothes or dish out on a whole new wardrobe for autumn. Sure shopping is always a hobby I can find a reason for…BUT that doesn’t mean fashion stands still! We are currently in the age of Hipsters! Think outside of the box, stay in the know, “REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE” and most of all, BE EDGY! Most of your favorite pieces can still be worn up until that frosty first morning of winter while still being fashionable. Fall has been claimed to be everyone’s “favorite” season. Haunted houses, dressing (or stuffing-depending on where you’re from), horror flicks, pumpkin spice latte back at Starbucks, apple cider … and the ability to layer your clothes til’ your heart’s content; that’s the whole meaning of fall right?

Remember that favorite maxi skirt you wore throughout summer? Pair it with some cute booties, accessorize with a belt, chunky jewelry, a jean jacket…the options are endless, whatever your style may be. While the weather still permits, it’s ok to still wear those shorts; match it with a floor duster cardigan, moccasins or other boots, and a cute fedora or a floppy hat.

At this point in our lives, assuming we’re mature young adults, we shouldn’t be a slave to the name any longer, sure we all love nice things including that designer bag but statements can be made with cute finds at your local thrift store; as surprising as that may be! Plato’s Closet is also a great place to find new pieces. A good jean jacket, boots, sweater, and a belt can be the ultimate pieces that can accessorize any look and transform your summer fit to a fall favorite look. Get creative! Bring those plum and maroon lipsticks to the forefront of your cabinet, take advantage of the fall sales and stock up on cute light weight scarves, and you can’t get enough of that online shopping with sales on cute sweaters.

Don’t let summer’s fun coming to an end make you drab, stay fashionable and innovative with your looks.

Here’s a video that could give you some ideas to keep the closet looks in rotation.

You know her as the rapper behind your favorite songs, but Iggy Azela is prepared to take the fashion world by storm.

The “Fancy” star signed a deal with Wilhelmina Models and landed her first national campaign, alongside her LA Lakers star boyfriend Nick Young, for Forever 21. While we find it challenging to take a simple picture with our boyfriend’s, it seemed that Azelea and Young too found it a little troubling at first.

“As the hours rolled by I think Nick started to realize photoshoots are hard work too,” Azalea tells PEOPLE. “It was funny watching him have that revelation!”

While Hustle Gang’s first lady found humor in watching him work, Nick seemed pleased learning from his model/rapper girlfriend. “It was real cool. We had great chemistry,” he says.

And although the more experienced model admits that she still gets a little nervous in front of the camera her love had no problem with posing for the camera.

“Nothing [was hard], I’m Swaggy! It comes natural!” he says.

Fall 2014 Fashion Trends

As the fall approaches, its time to switch from summer drab to fall fab! The fashion focus this fall will be western fashions, cozy knits, over-size coats, a resurgence of 60s fashions, and trendy sneakers. So let’s get started…

1. Getty  up cowboy! Or should I say cowgirl? A chic all black ensemble topped with a super cute cowboy hat will really give you that edgy look you’ve been looking for. So bring on the rodeo and show off your best Western look.

2. It’s a sock for your neck, better known as a turtleneck. Now I’m sure you’re probably already turned off by the fact that it’s a turtleneck, but no worries! Designers have made these extreme turtlenecks a lot more trendy to match your needs. Not to mention the fact that they keep you warm. With there being so many styles it’s almost impossible for anyone not to find the right one just for them.

3.  The larger the coat the warmer you’ll be. If this past winter taught me anything, it’s to simply bundle up. Over-sized coats are becoming so much more trendy. To save a little extra money when buying one try shopping at the outlet stores. This is a perfect time to find a nice heavy duty coat at a reasonable price. This fall/winter they’ll definitely come in handy when you’re trying to hide those few extra pounds. The bigger the coat the better!

4. A blast from the past is what I like to call this trend. Mini skirts, knee-high boots, and retro accessories are making a statement this season. Let’s cal it yesteryear because the 60s are swinging back in major way. A mini skirt paired with a sassy bodysuit and a pair of chic knee-high boots will surely have you turning heads when you walk-by.

5. Finally, ladies you can finally give your feet a break from those six-inch pumps and switch to the comfy sneakers. I don’t know how you ladies did it with wearing heels almost everyday, but kudos to you.

Lucky for your feet, designers have declared sneakers the footwear of the season. Make sure they’re trendy and compliment your outfit well.

Well that’s all I have for you today! Here’s a great fashion quote that I would like to leave you with: Oscar de la Renta said, “Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable, style is more about being yourself.”

Are You COOL Enough?

It’s easy for a person to ask, “What is fashion?,” but how many of us really know exactly what fashion is?

Fashion is an art form. It’s fun. It’s unique. It’s a peek into a personality. Who’s personality? Well, yours of course! Fashion presents an individual statement of expression for you and I.

Cool Club Clothing was developed to create a cult amongst the youth to better promote the musical sounds of its founder, Cyrus B. What Cyrus, a student at the University of Michigan, didn’t know was that those few shirts, with their “cool” and colorful design, would become a hit within his hometown in Detroit, MI.

“I did not realize that I was entering the fashion industry until a few months after I started making clothes,” said Cyrus. “I looked up one day and said ‘man, I think I’m a clothing designer.”

In August of 2012, Cool Club Clothing was established as a limited liability company in Michigan. As the brand developed so did their inspirational slogan, “Be You. Be Cool. Join the Club.” Judging by their fan following on social media and demand in product many people have already joined the club.

“The true purpose for creating C.C.C was to advocate the idea that with an open mind, one can reach limitless heights,” Cyrus says.

The brand’s most  successful product, by far, has been its collection of first generation beanie hats. These eye catching knitted hats feature the Cool Club signature logo with each letter a significantly different color.

Cool Club customers have also developed a high interest in the brand’s upcylced vintage wear. Each garment is given a unique and refined look as it mixes new school designs with old school fashions.

So what’s next for the brand?

Supporters can expect to see a new and improved collection of hats featuring revamped designs of the original first generation beanies and new snowball beanies! Along with the release of the new hats will be the release of two new sweatshirts.

In January, be sure to look out for more information about the EnspiRED Annual Fashion Show featured at the University of Michigan. As a way to kick off the new year, the brand plans to debut many special designs as well.

What To Wear To A Wedding

Wedding Attire

By Sydney B.

Have you ever been invited to a wedding, but didn’t know what to wear? Or maybe you were over or under dressed for the wedding depending on the formalities?
With the help of David’s Bridal, I’m going to help you decipher the Do’s and Don’ts of what is appropriate attire for weddings based on the time of day. So let’s get started!

First, let’s begin with the breakdown of what’s appropriate for the right time of day:

Informal Daytime: Short dress or suit. Business attire is OK for morning weddings.
Informal Evening: A nice cocktail dress will do which is any dressier dress, for example, a little black dress that’s not full-length.
Semi-Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit
Semi-formal Evening: Cocktail dress
Formal Daytime: Short dress or suit.
Formal Evening or Black-Tie: Long or dressy short cocktail (beading, glam accessories, wrap)
Ultra-formal or White Tie: Long gown, extra glitz. Your furs and diamonds need to say faux or costume jewelry as most will not have.

Now let’s explore the Dos and Don’ts:

1. If you have to ask if it’s appropriate, it probably isn’t. Do use good judgment if the invitation doesn’t specify the formality of the event.
2. Don’t wear white because it competes with the bride. There are plenty of other colors available. This rule may seem outdated, but it’s actually just good etiquette to not compete with the bride on her special day.
3. Anything too sparkly will make you look overdressed. Don’t wear black or sequins during the daytime.
4. Don’t worry about wearing the same colors as the bridesmaids or mothers. You can’t possibly coordinate with everyone in the wedding party.
5. Club wear, overtly sexy clothing such as strapless, see-through, and more, does not belong at a wedding. A pastel suit or soft floral dress for daytime or a little black dress for evening, after 6 p.m., will take you almost anywhere.
6. Casual can mean a pretty sundress like for a coastal or beach wedding, but rarely means something as sloppy as jeans or shorts.

Well, that’s all I have for you today. Here’s a great fashion quote that I would like to leave you with: Coco Chanel said “Fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions”.

How To Make The Best Fashion Decisions

By Sydney B.

Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak. The difference between style and fashion is quality! Here are a few of my favorite fashion decision making tips from myself and The Budget Fashionista:

Know What Looks Good On You: Although it may look good on the hanger that does not mean that it will look nice on you. Don’t just buy an item because you love the price. If you don’t like the way it looks, it will never come out of the closet. Be honest with yourself about your body; it will save you time and money.

Practice the Cost per Wear Formula: The price reflects the price not the actual value of the item. So ask yourself how much will you actually wear the item? This formula helps you to assess its value. To achieve that value you must:

Divide the cost of the item by the number of times you’ll actually wear it in a given period. For example a $100 shirt worn 20 times has a CPW of $5. Your goal is to shoot for a CPW of less than $3.

70/30 Rule: 70% of your closet should be classic pieces, 30% trendy pieces. Aim to spend as less on the trendy pieces because they have a short lifespan.

Well that’s all I have for your today! Here is a great fashion quote that I would like to leave you with: Donatella Versace said, “The three biggest mistakes are cheap suits, shoes, and shirts. Spend your money on something good”.

Fashion Budgeting

Shopping 2

By Sydney B.

When you’re dressing on a budget, simplicity is key. The question is: how can expensive looks be achievable on a budget? Well, here are a few of my favorite fashion budgeting tips:

Thrift: Visiting thrift stores, garage sales or your best friend’s closet is an ideal way to   expand your wardrobe and save some cash. You’ll find vintage clothing and past season trends at a very low price.

Head to the Outlet Mall: Outlet Malls are notorious for continuously promoting discounted prices. Occasionally many stores will have sales where an additional percentage will be taken off an already marked down item as well.

Pay Cash: Leave the credit or debit card at home. Paying with cash gives insight to how much you are actually paying. This will prompt you to make better buying decisions.

Break out those old Gift Cards: It’s common to receive a gift card, then store it away, and later forget all about it so break that bad habit. Instead of paying with cash or credit, track down your stash and pay by using a gift card.

Save your Receipts: Most stores will grant a price adjustment if you’ve recently purchased an item at the regular retail price. This is not only beneficial to you, but to the store as well. Many store managers would prefer refunding a portion of the funds rather than the entire sale.

Here’s a great fashion quote that I would like to leave you with: Coco Chanel said, “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”
